In Support of Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, President of MTSU.

We are writing to express our deep respect and unwavering support for Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, the 10th president of Middle Tennessee State University. Since assuming leadership in 2001, Dr. McPhee has guided MTSU through one of the most dynamic and successful periods in its more than 110-year history. His vision and commitment have elevated the university to new heights, marked by nearly $2 billion in campus, academic, and athletic improvements.

Under his leadership, MTSU has seen the opening of world-class facilities, including the $40.1 million School of Concrete and Construction Management, the $39.6 million Academic Classroom Building for the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, and the $147 million Science Corridor of Innovation. Most recently, MTSU proudly celebrated the completion of the $74.8 million Applied Engineering Building and the $66 million Stephen and Denise Smith Student-Athlete Performance Center, both symbols of Dr. McPhee’s commitment to student excellence.

Beyond bricks and mortar, Dr. McPhee’s legacy includes steadfast dedication to people—especially to the minority community in and around MTSU. He has been a true friend, advocate, and mentor, ensuring that voices from all backgrounds are heard, valued, and represented. Under his guidance, MTSU has become one of the top producers of low-income (Pell Grant–eligible) graduates in Tennessee, with over 40% of undergraduates receiving Pell support—proof of his commitment to access and equity.

With more than 20,000 students enrolled, MTSU now stands as the No. 1 provider of college graduates to the greater Nashville economy and the third-largest producer of graduates in Tennessee. These achievements are the direct result of Dr. McPhee’s leadership.

Dr. McPhee’s impact reaches far beyond the campus gates. He is a bridge-builder who has strengthened the relationship between MTSU and the surrounding community.

Middle Tennessee State University is stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive because of Dr. Sidney A. McPhee. His continued leadership and friendship are a blessing to the entire MTSU family and the Middle Tennessee community.

Sincerely,

Murfreesboro Branch NAACP,

Pastor David Settles, President
