Democracy doesn't happen on Election Day alone. It happens in the conversations, the questions, and the moments when community members look a candidate in the eye and ask, what will you actually do for us? Throughout 2026, the Murfreesboro NAACP has been committed to making those moments happen right here in Rutherford County.
This year, our branch has hosted a series of voter engagement forums designed to bridge the gap between candidates and the communities they hope to serve. We kicked things off by welcoming candidates for Rutherford County Sheriff on April 9, giving residents the rare opportunity to hear directly from those seeking one of the most impactful law enforcement positions in our county. Community members came ready with questions, and the candidates came ready to answer.

Our most exciting event of the year was Table Talk, a landmark candidate forum for County Commissioner and Rutherford County School Board races. This event was a true community collaboration: The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha – Omicron Sigma Lambda Chapter joined forces with NPHC Murfreesboro and the NAACP Murfreesboro to bring Rutherford County together at the local level.

The results were remarkable. Twenty-five candidates attended — representing Democrat, Republican, and Independent perspectives — all willing to sit at the same table, answer the same questions, and make their case directly to the people. Through moderated questions and open dialogue from the public, candidates shared their visions for our schools, our county commission, and our collective future. There was a healthy debate, genuine engagement, and the kind of exchange that voters deserve before casting a ballot.
What made Table Talk special wasn't just the number of candidates or the turnout, It was the spirit in the room. Neighbors showing up to be informed. Candidates showing the courage to put their platforms and their character on public display. And organizations collaborating to serve something bigger: an informed, empowered electorate.
Thank you to the community members who showed up. Your presence sends a message — that local elections matter, because they do. The people who sit on our school board and county commission make decisions that shape our children's education, our infrastructure, our taxes, and our quality of life every single day.
To the 25 candidates who participated, thank you for your willingness to run, to engage, and to be accountable. Running for office takes courage, and showing up to face hard questions takes even more.
And to the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha – Omicron Sigma Lambda Chapter and NPHC Murfreesboro — thank you for your unwavering partnership and commitment to this community.
The Murfreesboro NAACP will continue this work because civic engagement is not a one-time event. It's a practice. Stay connected, stay informed, and vote.
